Whenever you come up with an interesting idea, there are always some kind of limitations that prevent you from seeing it through. For example, if you want to listen to sounds from an application on one headset and listen to the sound of another application with a different headset, then you are fresh out of luck. Fortunately, this particular setup is not impossible with Audio Router. This piece of software gives you the possibility of routing audio from individual applications to specific devices, like speakers or headphones.

Audio Router is distributed as a free and open source application. Its components come in a ZIP archive, so you only need to extract them and run the executable, instead of going through an installation process. You can use it on any modern Windows system, without having to install any prerequisite tools or services.

The software's plain and simple user interface presents a series of volume controllers, not unlike the operating system's default volume mixer. You can find a controller for each audio application that is currently running. Additionally, the software provides you with a controller for general audio, as well as separate controllers for each audio device connected to your computer.

Obviously, you can increase or decrease the general volume or the volume for each application separately, but a more interesting aspect is the possibility of sending an audio signal to a specific device. A pop-up menu can be brought up for each controller, from which you can just select the "Route" option, after which you may choose an audio device on a small window. This will direct the audio signal from the corresponding application to your selected audio device.

Once you've selected an audio device, the sound will be redirected immediately. This way, you can have an application play audio on your headphones, for example, while another application can play something different on your speakers. You can have two users enjoy different media, without any interference.

With Audio Router, you can turn your computer in a complex media hub, with multiple audio signals coming out of different devices.

Pros

You can isolate audio signals to specific output devices. The software provides you with volume controllers for each application and for each connected audio device. Audio Router can be installed quickly, it's easy to use and it doesn't use too many resources.

Cons

There are no obvious drawbacks to address.
